Workers Tuesday morning removed the 10-foot bronze statue of Dearborn Mayor Orville Hubbard, which had become a symbol of Dearborn's segregationist past.
According to the Dearborn-based Arab American News, a supervisor on the scene said they were taking the statue to the Dearborn Historical Museum, where it will be stored until city officials figure out what to with it.
The statue stood since 1989 next to what had been Dearborn City Hall, at Michigan and Schaefer, but the building is undergoing renovations to become a working and living space for artists.
Hubbard, mayor from 1942-78, became known nationally for providing extraordinary city services and his objection to African Americans living in Dearborn, where many held jobs at Ford Motor Co. and other businesses.
