All city parks will stay open this summer thanks to corporate donations, grants and volunteers who stepped forward to "adopt" parks, Mayor Dave Bing announced Wednesday.
Darren A. Nichols reports in The Detroit News that Bing said the business community has pledged $14 million so far for his Active and Safe campaign for recreation.
The city also will use federal block grant dollars, and funding from the state and Wayne County, to keep 50 parks open that had been scheduled to close due to budget cuts, he said.
Meanwhile, 119 of the city's 300-plus parks will be adopted by community groups, businesses, churches and block clubs, Bing said.
"Working together, we can make a difference to transform Detroit," Bing said.
